About the Yellow Line

The Yellow Line runs between Huntington and Greenbelt, calling at 22 stations and taking about 51 minutes end to end. It crosses the Potomac on a bridge rather than in a tunnel, which makes it the only line with a daylight view of the river and the monuments.

For much of its route it runs alongside other lines – it shares 13 stations with the Green Line and 8 stations with the Blue Line – so at those stops you can change trains without leaving the paid area or paying a second fare.

Yellow Line stations in order

Times are cumulative from Huntington. Stations marked with a black ring are interchanges where you can change to another line without paying again.

Trains that turn back at Mt Vernon Sq

Only about half of Yellow Line trains run the full route. The rest terminate at Mt Vernon Sq, so every station beyond it sees a Yellow Line train roughly half as often as the stations south of it. If you are heading past Mt Vernon Sq, check the front of the train.

On a typical weekday Yellow Line trains run about every 6 minutes through the day, and every 7 minutes after 9:30 pm. These are the scheduled frequencies published in WMATA’s own feed for a normal service week.

One catch: not every train runs the full route, so the outer sections see trains at roughly half this rate. The section above explains which stations are affected.
