About Pentagon station
Pentagon is a rarity: a Metro station whose primary destination is a single building, and one of the largest office buildings on earth. The Blue and Yellow Line platforms sit directly beneath the Pentagon Transit Center, so most riders walk straight from the train into the building’s security screening or across to one of the busiest bus interchanges in the region. Traffic here is sharply peaked around shift changes and concentrated on weekdays. Visitors come for the Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed on September 11, 2001, and is open to the public without the tour booking that entry to the building itself requires. Arlington National Cemetery has its own station one stop away.

There is no neighborhood in the usual sense – the station is ringed by the Pentagon reservation, its parking fields, highway ramps and the transit center. Pentagon City and Crystal City lie to the south and are reached by train rather than on foot. Riders are overwhelmingly Department of Defense staff, contractors and bus passengers making regional connections.

Tips for using Pentagon
- Entering the Pentagon building itself requires an appointment or a booked tour – the memorial outside is open to the public without one.
- This is not the station for Arlington National Cemetery, which has its own stop one station north on the Blue Line.
- Photography restrictions apply around the Pentagon reservation, so pay attention to posted signage.
Pentagon station FAQ
Public tours of the building exist but must be arranged in advance through the official Pentagon Tours program, with a lead time of several weeks. You cannot simply walk in from the station. Check the current requirements on the Pentagon’s official site before planning a visit.
It sits on the southwest side of the building, roughly a ten-minute walk from the station following the signposted pedestrian route around the reservation. Unlike the building, the memorial is open to the public with no booking and no security screening.
No. Arlington Cemetery has its own Blue Line station with an entrance at the visitor center. From Pentagon it is one stop north. Walking between the two is not a sensible route given the highways and the size of the reservation.
The Blue and Yellow Lines. Blue trains run through Rosslyn and across the Potomac into downtown; Yellow trains cross the river on the bridge toward L’Enfant Plaza and up the Green Line corridor. Between them the station has good coverage of both the District and Northern Virginia.
