About King St-Old Town station
For visitors, King St-Old Town is one of the most rewarding stops in Virginia. The Blue and Yellow Lines stop here at the top of King Street, and the historic waterfront district of Old Town Alexandria runs downhill from the station toward the Potomac – a walk of about a mile, or a ride on the free King Street trolley that runs the length of it. Alexandria’s Amtrak station shares the site, and VRE commuter trains stop here too, which makes it a genuine multi-modal hub. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands on the hill immediately above the station and is visible from the platform.

Old Town Alexandria is one of the best-preserved historic districts in the region: 18th and 19th century brick houses, cobbled side streets, independent shops and restaurants along King Street, and a waterfront with boat docks and galleries. The blocks nearest the station are more modern and commercial; the historic character intensifies as you walk east toward the river.

Tips for using King St-Old Town
- A free trolley runs the length of King Street between the station area and the waterfront – a good option if you do not want to walk the full mile downhill and back up.
- The Masonic Memorial is uphill and closer than it looks from the platform; it is worth the short climb for the view.
- Amtrak and VRE trains use the adjacent Alexandria station, making this a useful place to combine a Metro trip with intercity or commuter rail.
King St-Old Town station FAQ
King Street runs downhill east from the station to the Potomac, about a mile – roughly a twenty-five minute walk with plenty to look at along the way. A free trolley also runs the length of King Street, which many visitors use in at least one direction.
Yes. Alexandria Union Station, served by Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express, is immediately beside the Metro station. It is one of the few places in the region where you can transfer between Metro, commuter rail, and intercity trains in a couple of minutes.
The Blue and Yellow Lines both stop here. Yellow Line trains cross the Potomac on the bridge toward L Enfant Plaza; Blue Line trains run north through Crystal City and Reagan National Airport toward Rosslyn and downtown Washington.
WMATA does not operate a park-and-ride facility here. There is metered street parking and commercial garages in the surrounding area, but Old Town parking is limited and often restricted. Arriving by train is usually the easier option.
