About Potomac Yard station
The newest station on the Blue and Yellow Lines, Potomac Yard was infilled between Reagan National Airport and Braddock Road to serve a stretch of Alexandria that had been redeveloping for years without rail access. It sits on the edge of a former rail yard, now filling with apartments, offices and the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus. Two entrances connect the platform to the neighborhood on one side and toward the parkland and Mount Vernon Trail on the other. It is a commuter and resident station rather than a tourist one, though the trail access makes it useful for cyclists and the airport is only a couple of stops north.
The area around Potomac Yard
North Alexandria’s Potomac Yard district: new mid-rise apartments, offices and shopping built on former railroad land, with Del Ray’s older commercial main street a walk to the west and Potomac Greens beside the parkway. The area is still knitting together, with construction ongoing in places. Riders are mostly local residents, campus users and commuters heading into the District.

Tips for using Potomac Yard
- Reagan National Airport is only a couple of stops north, which makes this a quiet alternative base near the airport.
- There is no Metro park-and-ride here, so plan on arriving by bike, bus or on foot.
- The Mount Vernon Trail is easily reached from the eastern side of the station if you are combining cycling with the train.
Potomac Yard station FAQ
It is the newest station on the Blue and Yellow Lines, added as an infill stop between Reagan National Airport and Braddock Road to serve the redeveloping Potomac Yard district. It opened well after the rest of the line, so some older maps do not show it.
No Metro park-and-ride facility. The station was designed around walking, cycling and bus access from the surrounding development, and nearby parking belongs to private buildings and the retail center. Braddock Road and King Street are the alternatives if you need to drive.
It is a long walk south – closer to forty minutes – so King Street-Old Town station is the sensible stop for Old Town. From Potomac Yard the Mount Vernon Trail makes the trip pleasant by bike, but it is not a short stroll on foot.
The Blue and Yellow Lines. Northbound, Blue trains run through Pentagon and Rosslyn into downtown, while Yellow trains cross the Potomac bridge to L’Enfant Plaza. Reagan National Airport is a short ride north on either line.
