About Wiehle-Reston East station

For seven years this was the western end of the Silver Line, and it still carries the infrastructure of a terminus: a large parking garage of around 2,300 spaces, an extensive bus loop, and generous kiss-and-ride lanes, all sitting in the median of the Dulles Toll Road. The line has since been extended out to Ashburn, but Wiehle-Reston East remains the main commuter parking station for the corridor, which is why the garage still fills. Around it, the Reston Station development has grown up with offices, apartments and restaurants directly beside the platform. The W&OD Trail crosses close by, making this one of the better stations in the system for combining a bike ride with a train trip.

The area around Wiehle-Reston East

This is the eastern edge of Reston, the planned community built in the 1960s around clusters of housing, woodland and man-made lakes. Immediately by the station is Reston Station, a newer mixed-use district of offices and apartments; beyond that are the wooded residential neighborhoods that give Reston its character. Riders are commuters from across western Fairfax County plus people working in the offices next door.
