About Herndon station
Herndon opened with the second phase of the Silver Line, and it is built for drivers: a parking garage with several thousand spaces, bus bays, and a station in the median of the Dulles Access Road corridor reached by a walkway over the highway lanes. The name comes from the nearby town, but the station is not in Herndon’s historic center – it sits in the office and research corridor along Sunrise Valley Drive. For commuters in western Fairfax County this is a major access point to the rail network, cutting out a long drive on the Toll Road. As a destination it offers very little; the surroundings are office buildings and parking.

The Dulles corridor west of Reston: low-rise corporate offices, technology and government contractor campuses, and newer apartment development, separated by wide roads and generous landscaping. The historic town of Herndon, with its small downtown and the W&OD Trail running through it, is a couple of miles north. Riders are commuters and office workers.

Tips for using Herndon
- The station is in the highway median, so plan on using the pedestrian bridge from the garage side – there is no direct street-level approach from the highway itself.
- Downtown Herndon is not walkable from here; use a bus connection or a bike if that is your destination.
- The garage is one of the larger ones on the Silver Line and generally holds capacity longer than the inner Virginia lots.
Herndon station FAQ
No. The station is in the Dulles corridor along Sunrise Valley Drive, roughly two miles from the historic town center. Reaching downtown Herndon means taking a connecting bus, cycling, or driving – it is not a comfortable walk.
It is on the right line but not the right stop. Silver Line trains continue west from Herndon to Washington Dulles International Airport station, which has a direct connection to the terminal. Stay on the train rather than getting off here.
Several thousand spaces in the station garage, making it one of the larger park-and-ride facilities in western Fairfax County. It generally has capacity later in the morning than stations closer to Washington. Check wmata.com for current rates.
The Silver Line only. Trains run east through Reston and Tysons and on into Arlington and downtown Washington, and west toward Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, and the Ashburn terminus at the far end of the line.
