Blue Line, Orange Line and Silver Line - interchange station in Washington, DC.
About Farragut West station
If you are visiting the White House and want the simplest walk, Farragut West is usually the answer. The station lies under I Street NW between 17th and 18th, serving the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines, with four street entrances scattered across the surrounding office blocks. It is a heavily used weekday station – the buildings above it hold law firms, associations, and international institutions – but it doubles as a visitor stop because Lafayette Square, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and the Renwick Gallery are all within a few minutes on foot. Farragut Square sits directly above the eastern end, and the Red Line’s Farragut North station is a short walk across it.

- Use the 17th Street end of the station for the White House, Lafayette Square, and the Renwick Gallery – it saves several blocks over the eastern entrances.
- Blue, Orange, and Silver trains all use the same platform here, so check the destination sign; they diverge west of Rosslyn.
- The Red Line is not available at this station; Farragut North is a five-minute walk across Farragut Square.
Farragut West station FAQ
The western entrances, near 18th and 17th Streets NW, put you closest. From there walk south on 17th Street past the Eisenhower Executive Office Building to reach Lafayette Square and the north view of the White House, roughly an eight minute walk.
Not inside the station. The Red Line stops at Farragut North, about two blocks away on the far side of Farragut Square, and the connection is made on foot at street level. WMATA has offered a fare arrangement for this walking transfer – check wmata.com for current details.
It is workable but not ideal. The Mall begins several blocks south, so expect a walk of fifteen minutes or more to the nearest museums. Smithsonian and Federal Triangle stations put you much closer to the Mall itself.
The Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines all serve this station from a single platform level. Heading east they run together through downtown; heading west they share track through Rosslyn before splitting toward Franconia-Springfield, Vienna, and Ashburn respectively.
