Eastern Market Station - DC Metro
Blue Line, Orange Line and Silver Line - interchange station in Washington, DC.
About Eastern Market station
The Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines all stop at Eastern Market, and for most riders that means one thing: Capitol Hill. The station sits under Pennsylvania Avenue SE in the middle of a neighborhood of brick rowhouses, and the walk from the fare gates to the covered market hall that gives the station its name takes only a couple of minutes. It is a weekday commuter stop for Hill staff and a genuine weekend destination, when the market’s outdoor stalls spill along 7th Street SE. Unusually for a station this central, its surroundings are mostly low-rise and residential – the buildings around the entrances are houses and neighborhood storefronts, not office towers.
The area around Eastern Market
Capitol Hill east of the Capitol itself: three-story brick rowhouses, small front gardens, corner bars, and two lively commercial spines in 7th Street SE and Barracks Row on 8th Street. It is a mix of congressional staffers, longtime residents, and families. Weekend mornings are the busiest time, when market shoppers and brunch crowds fill the sidewalks around the station.

Tips for using Eastern Market
- For the market itself, take the exit on the north side of Pennsylvania Avenue and walk up 7th Street SE – it is signed and only a couple of minutes away.
- Weekend mornings are far busier here than weekday middays, so allow extra time on the platform and at the fare gates on Saturday and Sunday.
- Capitol South is a better station than Eastern Market for the House office buildings and the Capitol Visitor Center; use this stop for the neighborhood, not for a Capitol tour.
Eastern Market station FAQ
Very close – the market hall on 7th Street SE is roughly a two to three minute walk from the station entrance on the north side of Pennsylvania Avenue. It is one of the shortest station-to-landmark walks anywhere on the DC Metro.
Capitol South is closer to the Capitol Visitor Center and the House office buildings. Eastern Market works if you are walking to the Library of Congress or the Supreme Court from the east, but expect a walk of roughly fifteen minutes rather than a few blocks.
Blue, Orange, and Silver Line trains all stop here. That means frequent service toward downtown Washington and out to Virginia, but note that the three lines split once they get past Rosslyn heading west, so check your train destination.
There is no Metro parking facility here. The surrounding streets are residential and largely permit-restricted, and on weekends spaces near the market are scarce. Most visitors arrive by train, bus, bike, or on foot.
