Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan does double duty, and its long name says so. Head north up Connecticut Avenue and you reach the main gate of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo; cross the Duke Ellington Bridge over Rock Creek and you are in Adams Morgan, one of the city’s densest nightlife and restaurant districts. In between is Woodley Park itself, a quiet stretch of large hotels, apartment buildings and rowhouses on the ridge above Rock Creek Park. It is one of the deepest stations on the Red Line, with a long escalator ride, and it swings between a calm residential stop on a Tuesday morning and a busy one on a summer weekend when the zoo is full.

Tips for using Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan
- The zoo entrance is uphill from the station on Connecticut Avenue — some visitors ride to Cleveland Park instead and walk downhill through the zoo, exiting here.
- For Adams Morgan, cross the Duke Ellington Bridge on Calvert Street; it is about a nine-minute walk from the station to 18th Street.
- This is one of the deepest Red Line stations with a long escalator run, so build in a couple of extra minutes for the climb.

It is one of two. Woodley Park sits below the zoo’s main Connecticut Avenue entrance, about a nine-minute uphill walk. Cleveland Park, one stop north, is level with the upper end of the zoo, so many visitors enter there and walk downhill to exit at Woodley Park.
Walk east on Calvert Street across the Duke Ellington Bridge over Rock Creek. That brings you to Columbia Road and the top of the 18th Street strip in roughly nine minutes. It is the standard route and well lit at night.
It combines the neighborhood it sits in, Woodley Park, with the two main destinations it serves — the National Zoo up Connecticut Avenue and Adams Morgan across the bridge. WMATA added the destination names because so many riders use it for one or the other.
No Metro park-and-ride facility. Connecticut Avenue has metered parking and the hotels have garages, but residential streets nearby are permit-restricted. Zoo visitors in particular are better off arriving by Metro than driving.
