Takoma is one of the more pleasant small stations on the Red Line — an above-ground platform on the DC side of the boundary with Takoma Park, Maryland, wrapped in mature trees and residential streets rather than parking decks. Step out and within a few minutes you are in Old Takoma, a compact commercial village of independent shops, a food co-op, cafes and a long-running Sunday farmers market. It draws a mix of riders: DC residents from the Takoma and Brightwood side, Maryland residents walking down from Takoma Park, and weekend visitors coming out specifically for the market and the shops. - The Sunday farmers market is the busiest time to arrive — it is on the Maryland side of the line, a few minutes from the station along Carroll Avenue.
- The station sits in DC but Old Takoma’s shops are mostly across the boundary in Maryland; the walk between them is short and flat.
- This is a small station without a Metro parking lot, and surrounding streets have residential permit restrictions, so arriving by train, bus or bike is much simpler than driving.

Walk northeast from the station toward Carroll Avenue and into Old Takoma; the Sunday market sets up on Laurel Avenue. It is roughly a six or seven minute walk on flat, sidewalked streets.
